The Early Days - A Foundation Built on Hard Work
Growing up in Barnsley and Rotherham, where roots were planted and the first sparks of ambition emerged. Being part of the local community gave us an understanding of the challenges faced by small businesses and the importance of relationships—whether on the cricket pitch or the High street.
Professionally, the journey began in IT project and programme management, delivering complex global projects for some of the largest international businesses. Over years spent in the corporate world, we learned how processes drive efficiency and how smart systems could transform productivity.
The Leap into Business Ownership
Parallel to a busy professional career, the entrepreneurial spirit was always alive and well. Then 13 years ago, we took our first step into business ownership, opening a specialist cricket shop on the high street in Retford, North Nottinghamshire. It was a world apart from global IT projects, but it provided invaluable lessons: The challenges of running a small business—juggling operations, customer relationships, and growth. The joys of connecting directly with customers and solving their problems. And the need for tools that simplify processes so business owners can focus on what matters most.
We wore every hat imaginable—salesperson, manager, marketer, and problem-solver. It was during this time that we realised how much small businesses struggle with time, repetitive tasks, and staying organised.
The Turning Point: Innovation Born from Challenge
Then came 2020, a year that changed everything. Like so many others, we faced the impact of lockdown and job loss, as the company we worked for went under. But instead of giving up, we saw an opportunity:
Businesses needed new, smarter ways to connect, engage, and manage their operations. Networking had to go digital, and systems had to become more efficient than ever before.
From this challenge, the idea for One Card was born—a simple but powerful digital business card solution to help people connect effortlessly and professionally.
